I WAS LITERALLY JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS TODAY.
smdy:
for some reason, this really upsets me.
What’s the source on this? I mean, Ron learned to speak it because that’s how he and Hermione got into the Chamber of Secrets in DH…
It’s legit. The source is a Bloomsbury webchat. She also said he’s happy to have lost the ability.
Additionally, in the October 19th Carnegie hall appearance she said that Parseltongue cannot really be learned, an Ron only knew “open” (but she also said in the Bloomsbury webchat that Dumbledore knew how to speak it, so at least some people can learn it).
I can say “Auf Wiedersehen” but that doesn’t mean I speak German.
I don’t consider Parseltongue a “language” so to speak, that you can learn and translate things into. If you could, why wouldn’t Dumbledore have learned it? It’s an ability to communicate with another species. Harry lost this ability when he lost Voldemort’s soul.
The Chamber of Secrets was not a snake. It was a vault that was programmed to open it when someone spoke to it in Parseltongue. Ron repeated the correct sounds, so it opened. I think if Ron had tried to talk to an actual snake, the snake would not be able to understand him, because language and communication is more than repeating sounds.
My emphasis ^^; I think that’s a really interesting hypothesis.
Well that sucks.
